How much ice does a cooler actually need?

Most people underestimate ice, then wonder why their cooler is lukewarm by lunchtime. A common packing rule used by camping and outdoor guides is to scale ice to the weight of what you’re keeping cold: about 2 pounds of ice per pound of food in mild weather, climbing to 2.5:1 once it’s warm out and 3:1 once temperatures push past 85°F, since heat accelerates melt dramatically.

Trip length matters just as much as temperature. A cooler holds its cold for roughly a day before it needs replenishing, so a two-day trip needs about double the ice of a single afternoon out, not just a little extra. If you’re driving past a gas station or store partway through a multi-day trip, budgeting for a mid-trip ice top-up is often more practical than trying to pack every pound up front.

Does it matter if the food is already cold when I pack it?

Yes. Pre-chilling food and drinks in the fridge or freezer before they go in the cooler means the ice spends its energy keeping things cold instead of cooling them down from room temperature first. Packing warm items is one of the fastest ways to burn through ice early on a trip.
