Why the numbers move the way they do

Food and drink totals scale linearly with headcount, since each additional adult or child simply adds its own per-person weight to the running total. Ice scales with food weight, not headcount directly — it's derived from the food total above using the same 80°F ratio band for every row, which is why the ice column tracks the food column proportionally rather than the guest count on its own.

Blanket size is the one column with a fixed cost baked in on top of the per-person figure: a flat 6-square-foot gear allowance for a basket or cooler on the blanket, which is why the smallest party sizes show a proportionally bigger jump in blanket size than the food and ice columns do for the same headcount increase — the flat allowance matters more, relatively, for a small group than a large one.

Notice that "Start prep by" and "Leave by" never change across the table — temperature has no effect on how long prep or driving takes. Only the safety window and the eat-by time shift, and they shift exactly once, at 90°F: standard food-safety guidance is a 2-hour window below that line and a 1-hour window at or above it.

Why does the food and ice table assume a standard 3-hour meal at 80°F?

Holding meal type, duration, and temperature constant is what makes the table readable as a straight party-size comparison — if all four inputs changed at once, the table couldn't isolate what guest count alone does to the numbers. Why does the prep-timing table's start time stay the same across every temperature?

Because temperature doesn't affect how long any prep task takes or how long the drive is — it only affects the food-safety window once food is actually served. The table is built this way on purpose, to make that distinction clear: your morning schedule is temperature-independent; the eat-by clock afterward is not.
